I was born in Cienfuego, Cuba on August 30, 1960. Like many Cubans at the time, my parents fled the island due to the Castro Regime in 1970 and arrived in North Miami where I attended Benjamin Franklin Elementary. Later, we settled in Hialeah, where I attended Henry H. Filer Middle School and Hialeah SHS during my formative years. After high school, I enlisted in the U.S Navy active duty and shortly thereafter married my high school girl-friend, Maria, in 1985. Since then, we’ve been happily building a home life and raising our kids in Miami Springs. I currently have a son-Jaime(29), daughter-Nicole(25), and a grandson-Damien(10). I returned to school and completed a bachelor’s degree in 1996 from University of Miami with a major in Business Administration and a minor in Politics and in 2010; I completed a Masters in Education Administration at St. Thomas University. After graduating from UM, I held several management positions in the private sector, namely, assistant manager, pricing manager, and account manager.
I discovered my passion for politics under the influence of Dr. West, political science professor at U.M., who passionately emphasized civic duty and involvement. I began to volunteer starting at the first NAFTA 1994 convention where leaders from the Americas’ Hemisphere met to celebrate the free trade agreement led by U.S. President, Bill Clinton. At Camillus house, I served in giving aid to the homeless and the poor.
Still having a desire for public service, I entered the teaching profession with the drive to share my passion with kids and move them into civic participation. In the process, I have acquired the aspiration to hold public office as a privilege. Community leaders who urged me to pursue a path in politics noticed my involvement in the community.
