The Information Technology Department is responsible for City-wide computer operations. This includes hardware and software purchasing, Local and wide area network cofigurations, support, repair, and maintenance. The City of Miami Springs network includes City Hall, Police Department, Publi Works, Golf, and Parks & Recreation. Stand alone networks include the Senior Center and Community Policing Office.
The department provides computer support in all forms: software and hardware selection, purchasing, day-to-day consultation with computer operators, hardware diagnostics and repair, maintenance for network hardware and software along with the City's telephone communications systems and the City GIS (Geographic Information System). Most computer operations are served by the network, including word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, personnel scheduling, accounting, utility billing, permit processing, and police computer-aided dispatch.
The current network configuration consists of 13 servers. These servers can store several terabytes of information. Most workstations run either Windows XP or Windows 7. Most segments of the network are using Category 5 twisted pair cabling, allowing the entire network to run at 100 mbps (megabits per second). All network files are backed up daily to an array drive. The network also includes several wireless access devices located throughout the City.
