Millard - McCarty House

MILLARD – MCCARTY HOUSE
424 Hunting Lodge Drive

National Register of Historic Places (1986)
Designated Miami Springs Historic Site (1989)

This unique two story house is located on the northern edge of the Miami Springs Golf Course. It features a lovely tiled central courtyard, a round fountain, a separate two story garage apartment and a rear porch with five screened arches. The buildings are laid out in an L shape enclosed by an irregular wall which reaches to about five feet with a round arched doorway and cypress door. The structures are battered and hand-molded in appearance, featuring the flat roofs, irregular parapets, prominent water spouts, buttresses, bell cote motif and recessed windows characteristic of the town’s Pueblo Revival style. Because no major alterations have been made to the exterior, it remains a fine example of the homes Glenn Curtiss envisioned for Country Club Estates.

It was built in 1925, for the George Roberts Millard family, who had moved across the river from Hialeah. Millard was a real estate salesman as well as the first Postmaster of Hialeah, and his daughter (named Leah, for the town) was the first white child born in Hialeah. In 1941, U.S. Army Col. William McCarty and his wife Eugenie purchased the home. Mrs. McCarty had been a resident of this community since 1922. Between World War II and the Korean War, Col. McCarty served as Mayor of Miami Springs. After retiring from military service, he lived here until his death in 1993. The home still remains in the McCarty family today.
