The City of Miami Springs was originally founded as Country Club Estates in 1926 by aviation pioneer, inventor, and land developer Glenn H. Curtiss. Spanning 2.9 square miles in a distinctive triangular shape, the city developed alongside the aviation industry and quickly became a preferred community for airline employees and those working in related fields.
Conveniently located in the heart of Miami-Dade County Miami Springs is bordered by Miami International Airport, the City of Hialeah, the Village of Virginia Gardens, and the Town of Medley. Despite being surrounded by the rapid growth of Miami-Dade, Miami Springs has retained its small-town charm and remains a desirable “bedroom community.” Residents enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere, a central location, and a variety of civic amenities, including parks, racquetball and tennis courts, a golf course, municipal pool, and a newly constructed community center and theater.
Home to approximately 14,000 residents, Miami Springs is primarily composed of single-family homes, with a limited number of apartments. The historic downtown district features a mix of professional offices, restaurants, and small retail shops, adding to the city’s unique character.
City Hall, the Police Department, and Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Station are located at 201 Westward Drive, just steps from “The Circle”—a historic hub that has served as the heart of the community since the city’s founding.
The City of Miami Springs operates under a council-manager form of government. A City Manager, appointed by a five-member elected body—including the Mayor and four Council Members—serves as the chief administrative officer. The City Manager oversees a team of approximately 125 full-time and 110 part-time or seasonal employees across eight key departments: Police; Public Works; Recreation and Golf; Finance; Zoning and Planning; Building and Code Compliance; Human Resources; and Elderly Services. The Police and Public Works departments make up two-thirds of the workforce, playing critical roles in emergency preparedness and response.
Miami Springs is a close-knit, multigenerational community where many city employees grew up, attended school, and continue to raise families. The city's strong sense of community and dedication to public safety have contributed to consistently low crime rates. Miami Springs has been recognized as a Tree City USA since 1993 and was recently designated a “Preserve America City” in honor of its commitment to preserving the environment, local history, and quality of life.
With its relatively small population, civic engagement runs deep. Residents often elect leaders with proven records of community involvement. The Mayor and Council Members are highly accessible, frequently attending local events and maintaining open lines of communication with residents and business owners. Their responsiveness and dedication contribute to a government that reflects the values of those who live and work in the City “At the Heart of It All!”
