Mayor Maria Puente Mitchell is certain that there is no better place to call home than the amazing City of Miami Springs.  She is grateful to the residents of Miami Springs for electing her to the City Council in April 2017 and providing her the opportunity to serve them.   She has lived here with her husband, Lloyd, since 1985.  Their three daughters attended Grace Lutheran, Springview Elementary and Blessed Trinity Schools and grew up participating in many of the city’s exceptional youth programs, including Tennis, Little League, Girl Scouts, Pelican Playhouse and Swim Team.

Mayor Mitchell’s civic involvement began in 1989 when she approached the Miami Springs Junior Woman’s Club about initiating the Miami Springs Bike Path Project as a community improvement project.   The project was intended to promote community connectivity, safety and health and made Miami Springs one of the first Bike/Pedestrian friendly communities in South Florida!

Mayor Mitchell has graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Miami and University of Georgia in Environmental Health Science.  She has over thirty years’ experience promoting the safety, health, and sustainability of South Florida communities and public sector services.   As the former Manager of Risk Management and Safety for Miami-Dade County, she and her staff provided Miami-Dade County with policies and oversight of safety and occupational health issues for the county’s 27,000 employees, 25 municipal departments and 2.7 million residents.  She is an adjunct professor and lecturer at South Florida universities in the fields of Industrial Ecology, Sustainability, Safety and Environmental Health.  She has initiated important partnerships between Miami-Dade County and other organizations to promote safety, health and sustainability nationwide, and holds professional certifications in these fields.  She is Editor-in-Chief of the Florida Department of Health’s Occupational Injury and Illness Coalition Journal; and also serves on the Leadership Board of the National Safety Council’s Government and Public Sector Division.

Mayor Maria Puente Mitchell’s priorities are to actively represent, protect and promote the interests of Miami Springs’ residents, businesses and quality of life.  She wants to tap into the wealth of talent, knowledge and civic pride in our community and work with residents to make Miami Springs a more walkable, ridable, healthy and affordable place to live, work and visit.  Her goal is for Miami Springs become an environmentally and economically sustainable community, and a role model for other Florida communities!
