"Billy" Wilcox is remembered not only for his years of outstanding local and federal government service, but also for his sense of humor and love of community theater.
To replace a “three pontoon barge bridge” that connected Country Club Estates and Hialeah, the Warren Pony Swing Bridge was donated in 1923 to Dade County by city founder Glenn Curtiss. A bridge tender lived in a small house on the Hialeah side, and used a long metal pipe at the pivot pier to manually turn the bobtail bridge, usually with the help of some neighborhood children. It is the only one of its kind in the State of Florida.
Originally sited in 1927 downstream at 36th Street, this imposing vertical lift bridge was floated upriver on a barge and relocated to this location in 1954 to carry an increasing volume of outgoing traffic across the Miami (C-6) River Canal.
The only apartment house built by the Curtiss-Bright Company, "Azure Villas" was promoted as “one of the best appointed apartment houses in the state.” An early resident recalled that often the same tenants rented there every winter, and some stayed all year. It was also the gathering point and shelter for many of townspeople during the disastrous September 1926 hurricane.
Exemplifying the best of Glenn Curtiss's vision for Country Club Estates, this charming home with its evocative and lush tropical landscaping features a lovely tiled central courtyard, a round fountain, a separate two story garage apartment and a rear porch with five screened arches.
This building located in the heart of our community has been home to the Miami Springs Woman’s Club since it was built in 1949, and for many years was also the town's library.
Country Club Estates began as a town that was built around a golf course, and to this day Miami Springs maintains this exceptional public facility as a tribute to our past.
This is the second home Glenn Curtiss built for his mother. An outstanding example of Pueblo Revival architecture, a photograph of its rambling and attractive exterior was featured in the first real estate promotional brochures for Country Club Estates.
This log cabin is considered the first structure built in Miami Springs, and to date has been used as a clubhouse for the Miami Gun Club, the Archery Golf Club, a schoolhouse, a perfume factory an airplane factory and a private residence.
