Criminals often use deception to gain access to homes, steal personal information, or convince people to hand over money. They may pretend to be utility workers, contractors, salespeople, charity representatives, or government employees.
The Miami Springs Police Department encourages residents to remain alert and verify the identity of anyone requesting access to their home or asking for money.
Be Aware of Fake Identification and Uniforms
Many legitimate employees wear uniforms, photo identification badges, or company logos. Unfortunately, scammers often use fake IDs, uniforms, clipboards, or branded vehicles to appear trustworthy.
If someone claims to represent a utility company, government agency, or contractor and you were not expecting them:
- Ask for identification.
- Do not allow them inside your home until you have verified who they are.
- Contact the company or agency using a phone number you know is legitimate—not one provided by the visitor.
- If something doesn't seem right, call the Miami Springs Police Department immediately.
Common Door-to-Door Scams
Be cautious of individuals who:
- Ask for money for emergencies, such as gas, medical expenses, or transportation.
- Claim to be utility workers who need to inspect your water, electric, or gas service.
- Attempt to distract you while another person enters your home.
- Offer home repairs, tree trimming, driveway paving, or other services at unusually low prices and request payment before completing the work.
- Sell products or solicit donations for organizations that cannot be verified.
- Ask you to participate in contests, surveys, or charitable causes that require personal or financial information.
- Approach you while you're outside your home asking for directions or assistance in an attempt to distract you.
Protect Yourself
- Do not open your door to strangers unless you are expecting them.
- Never provide money or personal information to someone whose identity you cannot verify.
- Do not pay deposits to unsolicited contractors or home repair services.
- Keep doors locked, even when you are home.
- Trust your instincts. If a situation feels suspicious, it probably is.
- Report suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood.
Solicitors
If someone comes to your door soliciting, contact the Miami Springs Police Department at 305-888-9711. If it is safe to do so, provide a description of the individual and any vehicle they are using.

If You Suspect a Scam
If you believe someone is attempting to scam you or gain unlawful access to your home:
- Do not confront the individual.
- Move to a safe location.
- Call the Miami Springs Police Department immediately.
