Distraction Theft Prevention

Distraction theft is a crime in which one person intentionally distracts a victim while another steals personal belongings. These thefts often happen quickly and without the victim realizing it until the thief is gone.

Distraction thieves may work alone or in groups and can be men or women. They often appear friendly, well-dressed, and trustworthy, using conversation or requests for assistance to divert a person's attention.

Where Do These Crimes Occur?

Distraction thefts commonly occur in places where people feel safe, including:

  • Grocery stores
  • Retail stores and shopping malls
  • Parking lots
  • Banks and ATMs
  • Hotel lobbies
  • Airports
  • Car rental agencies

These crimes can happen during both the day and at night.

Common Distraction Scams

Criminals may attempt to distract you by:

  • Asking for directions or assistance.
  • Requesting your opinion about a product.
  • Claiming you dropped money or another personal item.
  • Telling you that your vehicle has a flat tire or was damaged.
  • Pretending to be ill or searching for a lost child.
  • Offering unsolicited help with your vehicle.

While your attention is diverted, an accomplice may steal your purse, wallet, phone, bank bag, or other valuables.

Protect Yourself While Shopping

  • Keep your purse, wallet, or bag with you at all times.
  • Never leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart.
  • Use handbags with zippered or secure closures whenever possible.
  • Keep your purse closed and carried in front of your body.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings, especially if approached by strangers.

In Parking Lots

  • Be cautious of anyone approaching you unexpectedly.
  • Before exiting your vehicle, look around the area.
  • Lock your doors immediately after entering your vehicle.
  • If someone claims there is a problem with your vehicle, use caution before stepping away from your belongings.
  • Never leave your purse or valuables visible inside your vehicle.

At Banks

Criminals may watch customers leaving banks and attempt to distract them after they withdraw cash.

If you've recently made a withdrawal:

  • Keep cash and bank bags out of sight.
  • Go directly to your destination.
  • Be alert if someone approaches you unexpectedly.
  • Do not leave money or valuables unattended inside your vehicle.

Seniors Are Frequently Targeted

While anyone can become a victim, distraction thieves often target older adults because they may appear more trusting or less likely to confront a suspect.

Family members are encouraged to discuss these scams with older relatives and remind them to remain cautious when approached by strangers.

If You Become a Victim

If you believe you have been the victim of a distraction theft:

  • Call the Miami Springs Police Department immediately.
  • If the theft occurred at a business, notify store management as soon as possible.
  • Contact your bank and credit card companies immediately if your wallet or financial information was stolen.
  • Monitor your accounts and report any unauthorized transactions.

Stay Alert

The best defense against distraction theft is awareness. Criminals often rely on creating confusion and taking advantage of a brief moment of inattention.

If someone unexpectedly approaches you and something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep your belongings secure, and report suspicious activity to the Miami Springs Police Department.
