Think Before You Post
A single post, message, or comment made as a joke can have serious real-world consequences.
The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice's It's No Joke campaign was created to educate, encourage, and support parents, guardians, and students about the dangers of making threats online or through social media. The campaign aims to reduce school threats and help keep Florida's schools safe.
Many young people don't realize that posting or sending a threat—even if they never intended to act on it or believed it was "just a joke"—can lead to criminal charges, school disciplinary action, and long-lasting consequences.
Start the Conversation
Parents and guardians play an important role in helping children understand responsible online behavior. Talk with your child about:
- Thinking before posting or sending messages online.
- The serious consequences of making threats, even as a joke.
- Using social media responsibly and respectfully.
- Reporting concerning or threatening behavior to a trusted adult.
Remember: It's Not Worth the Risk
Florida law takes school threats seriously. A post made in jest can still result in an arrest, criminal charges, school discipline, and a permanent impact on a young person's future.
By having open conversations and encouraging responsible online behavior, we can work together to keep our schools, students, and community safe.
